Promoting Student-Centered Math Practices with ESC Math Specialists
Program Objectives
Together, we will build sustainable capacity to support student-centered math instruction across the state in alignment with Ohio Materials Matter and related HQIM initiatives. We will support educators in the delivery of student-centered math practices in alignment with Ohio’s Learning Standards for Mathematics, the Standards for Mathematical Practices, and the Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices in their classrooms by increasing educator access to high-quality professional learning.
We will accomplish this by:
- Investing in the instructional coaching skills and knowledge of student-centered mathematical practices within the ESC Math Specialists across the state through targeted learning experiences and workshops
- Providing opportunities for ESC Math Specialists and school/district leaders to build partnerships focused on student-centered math instruction in structured, supportive environments like 1:1 personalized coaching and guided learning walks
We will measure success by assessing:
- Engagement and participation in events and 1:1 coaching
- Participant assessment of ability to impact student outcomes
- Participant self-assessment of their confidence to try new practices
- Observed shifts in instructional practice in classrooms during learning walks

Foundations of Student-Centered Math – August 28th through October 5th (In-Person Events)
- Series is designed to be an introduction to best practices of student-centered math instruction. ESC Math Specialists will learn how to identify the characteristics of a rich math task and how to support students in accessing and persevering through math tasks. They will also learn strategies that support students to engage in problem-solving for deeper learning and teacher moves that address mindset, access, and connections that foster meaningful mathematical discourse every day.
- ESC Math Specialists should participate in all three workshops, and can self-select into which cohort is more appropriate for their context. The “Leader-focused” cohort will be tailored to working primarily with school or district leaders. The “Teacher-focused” cohort will be tailored to working primarily with teachers.
Note: All sessions in table below are scheduled from 9am - 3pm and will be held at ESC of Central Ohio located at 2080 Citygate Drive, Columbus, OH 43219

Going Deeper with Student-Centered Math Series – October through December (Virtual)
- ESC Math Specialists will focus deeply on two highly effective, instructional shifts - Math Language Routines (Stanford University Graduate School of Education) and the 5 Practices for Orchestrating Productive Mathematics Discussions (Margaret Schwan Smith, Mary Kay Stein, NCTM). ESC Math Specialists will engage in a regular series of virtual workshops, remaining in the same cohorts as they were in for the Coaching Skills Series. They will have the opportunity to learn why and how to intentionally solicit student thinking and organize specific student ideas in a discussion that supports all students in the class to develop their conceptual understanding of how the Math Language Routines help all students develop their communication skills and make sense of new math concepts at the same time. Through the combination of these virtual workshops and their 1:1 sessions with a BL coach, Math Specialists will develop an understanding of these instructional shifts and how they can, as coaches themselves, create a continuous improvement system for teachers through goal-setting, observation, feedback, reflection, and collaborative planning.
Note: All sessions will be hosted virtually from 10am-12pm ET

Learning Walk Cycle with School/District Leaders – October through April (In-Person)
- Learning walks are a non-evaluative, collaborative experience that brings leaders together to observe math classrooms, acknowledge student-centered math practices, and create a tailored learning plan to support teachers.
- ESC Math Specialists will build their capacity by completing a full learning walk cycle with their school/district partner, which will help target their support and deepen their partnership based on evidence from learning walk observations.
- Translating learning walk data into action will be guided by BetterLesson facilitators, and future professional learning experiences, including 1:1 coaching for ESC Math Specialists and school/district leaders, can be targeted to meet the needs of teachers based on this evidence.
- Important! Schedule a learning walk using this form

Identifying a School or District Partner
Each ESC Math Specialist will identify one school or district leader to partner with during SY23-24 as part of this program. Establishing this partnership will enable ESC Math Specialists and school/district leaders to build expertise around not only the student-centered mathematical practices needed to support the state’s HQIM efforts but also around the capabilities needed to be an effective instructional coach for math educators across the state.
Why select one school/district partner?
Working with one school/district leader for the full year will allow each ESC Math Specialists and school/district leaders to complete a full cycle of structured coaching and learning walks with BetterLesson facilitators to assess shifts in instructional practice, identify effective practices, and align on opportunities for growth within similar classrooms over the course of the year
What can we provide the school/district leader for agreeing to participate in this program?
Each school or district leader will receive multi-layered support from our partner, BetterLesson, to help them build student-centered math practices at no cost to their school or district.
