Summer Leader PD Calendar

In response to the initial wave of school closings due to COVID-19, teachers and leaders across North Carolina did an amazing job this spring of shifting into remote learning without much advance notice.  For the start of the 2020-21 school year, we are all moving out of reactive leadership to a crisis and into proactive planning as we prepare for any number of possibilities when schools re-open on August 17.

NC ASCD, in partnership with BetterLesson, is offering professional development that addresses the needs of district and school administrators in a timely way.  An international leader in building educators’ flexible learning capacities, BetterLesson is offering low-cost virtual learning workshops that will equip you to be prepared and responsive to changing circumstances when students and staff return to school.

Below are the workshops we are offering in July.  Each workshop is offered twice at different times of the day to make it possible for leaders who wish to attend all 10 sessions to do so.  Each workshop costs $50 per participant for NCASCD members and you may sign up for as many sessions as you like.  BetterLesson will invoice your district for the participation of all of the leaders from your district after you register.

If you are interested in finding out more about 1:1 leadership coaching from BetterLesson after the workshops, please say so in the form when you register for workshops via the blue “Reserve Your Spot!” button below.

About Virtual Learning Workshops

Our virtual workshops are highly collaborative and participatory -- they are not sit-and-get webinars!   Facilitated over Zoom videoconferencing, each virtual learning workshop is 2 hours long. Throughout the workshop, a BetterLesson coach will support leaders to:

  • Learn about high-impact instructional strategies
  • Experience active virtual pedagogy through chatting, digital tools, and small-group sessions
  • Create and execute manageable implementation steps
  • Build a collaborative learning community to share challenges and successes

What are learning norms for when we are in a virtual workshop session?

  • 1:1 devices are key: It is essential to join the session from your own device.  It’s tough to engage when you’re sharing a computer with someone else (remember it’s interactive!).
  • Arrive early:  Please log on to the Zoom room at least 5 minutes before to make sure all the technology works so that the group can start on time.
  • Be in your own space:  If you do have to share a space with other participants, please still have your own device, mute your microphone, and use headphones to reduce feedback noise.
  • Let us see you: Please leave your camera ON for the session.  It is so much better when we can see each other!
  • Learning is social:  We believe any professional learning should give you time to share with peers and work together.  Zoom’s Chat feature is an ongoing space to surface questions and share your thoughts, and each workshop will regularly ask you to work in small groups.  Arrive ready to lean in!
